Carmelo León González

PhD in Economic and Business Sciences from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Master in Economics, University of Manchester. Full Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He is the Director of the UNESCO Chair in Tourism Planning and Sustainable Development, integrated into the Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development (TiDES) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which he has directed since 2012. He has been a Visiting Researcher at the University of California. Director of the H2020 project, SOCLIMPACT, a project analyzing the local-scale impacts of climate change in European island territories, with 13 research centers from 8 countries. His specialty is the economic and social aspects related to the environment and tourism, and the analysis of tourists’ preferences regarding the environment and natural resources, with implications for marketing and tourism product design. He has conducted research on La Palma related to the valuation of natural spaces such as the Caldera National Park, market analysis related to niches such as rural tourism, astrotourism, and health tourism, among others.
